Wet or muddy conditions do not automatically let you move the ball to a better spot.
Plain-language guide · Model Local Rule E-3. Use the current official text and your round’s Local Rules for a ruling.
Read the notice
Preferred lies, often called lift, clean, and place, apply only when the Committee adopts the Local Rule. It specifies the permitted area and placement distance. Never assume one club-length.
Follow the procedure
When your ball qualifies, identify the original spot, lift and clean if desired, and place it once on an allowed spot within the stated distance, in the permitted area and no closer to the hole. Ask for help if the ball will not stay.
Keep friendly adaptations separate
A learning group may agree to make a casual round easier. Describe that honestly as a practice arrangement. Do not present it as an adopted Local Rule or assume the resulting score is acceptable for posting.
