A good aim is easier when you choose it before stepping over the ball.

Choose a line

Stand behind the ball and pick a target. Find a small spot on the same line a short distance ahead. Aim the clubface there before setting your feet.

Set the body alongside it

For a basic straight shot, the feet and shoulders are approximately parallel to the target line, like railway tracks. Left-handed golfers mirror the picture. Do not twist the body simply to point the feet directly at the distant target.

Match ball position to the club

Short irons often begin near the middle of the stance; longer clubs tend to move progressively forward. A teed driver is commonly near the inside of the lead heel. These are starting ideas, not rules for every player.

Check at practice

Use alignment sticks safely on the ground, well clear of the club’s path. During a round, do not set down an object to help with alignment. Ask your coach to check position before making large changes.
